Changhua County Cao Hu Elementary School|Fangcao Cocoon
“The greatest gift you can give someone is the space to be his or her authentic self.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
Caohu Elementary School is located in the coastal area of Changhua, where approximately 70% of students come from single-parent, grandparent-led, or low-income families. The school offers year-round after-school care and support, balancing academic learning with emotional companionship. However, the current guidance office shares a space with the health center, resulting in a mixed-use environment that lacks the atmosphere necessary for effective counseling. The school plans to relocate the health center and transform the room into a gentle, empathetic counseling space where children can feel safe, relieve stress, and find comfort.
INTRODUCING A CALMING, HEALING ENVIRONMENT
The metal bars outside the original classroom were removed, and the entrance was redesigned using a clean, understated signage system and soft green tones to create a safe and welcoming threshold. Upon entering the “Cocoon Center,” a neutral palette of grass green and wood grain helps calm emotions and reduce distractions. Abundant natural light, a cozy quiet corner, and an interactive mood board together shape a supportive space filled with positive energy.
CREATING A FLEXIBLE SPACE FOR EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION
In “Fangcao Cocoon,” the Mood Seed Wall serves multiple functions: it forms a peaceful path, bridges the height difference between indoor and outdoor areas, and provides display, interaction, storage, and spatial separation. Modular furniture allows users to freely adjust the layout according to individual or group counseling needs, enhancing flexibility and comfort. Through thoughtful design, warmth and care are gently rooted in each child's heart.
