Glass Craft Education as a School Specialty

Fuli Junior High School, located along the Xiangshan coastline of Hsinchu City, is positioned as a small but distinctive school. In addition to its internationally recognized archery program, the school has actively developed glass-art education in recent years, with students winning numerous awards across major competitions. These innovative courses provide rural students with broader opportunities while helping traditional craftsmanship thrive on campus. However, despite having well-equipped facilities for glass-making instruction, the school lacked a professional and visually compelling exhibition venue capable of fully showcasing the value of these remarkable works.

“Refining” the Essence of Glassmaking — Crafting a Rich, Immersive Exhibition Journey

Drawing inspiration from the glass-making process, the design team selected orange and white as the core palette: orange represents molten glass glowing at high temperatures, evoking warmth and energy, while white symbolizes the purity and clarity of cooled glass, serving as the ideal backdrop for the artworks.

To enhance visual appeal, the exterior façade adopts a striking orange tone and incorporates glass display windows to connect interior and exterior views, naturally inviting visitors to pause and enter. Upon stepping into the kiln-inspired orange tunnel, visitors experience the sensation of moving through the stages of glass refinement as their sightline gradually leads toward the feature exhibit area. Transitioning along an orange wall lined with glass artworks, one enters the white gallery space, where the translucency and brilliance of diverse glass pieces unfold. Through these layered spatial cues, visitors gain a deeper appreciation of the craft’s unique beauty.

“Convergence” Through Flexible Display — Creating a Versatile Space that Amplifies Each Artwork

Different types of glass artworks require unique modes of presentation. To support this, the design integrates open vitrines, movable display cabinets, and illuminated tables as adaptable exhibition components that can be easily rearranged to suit workshops, demonstrations, or thematic showcases. Through strategic lighting and varied display approaches, three-dimensional, flat, and suspended works reveal rich visual effects of transparency, reflection, and refraction. A large mirrored wall further extends the perception of space, adding playful and unexpected reflections that enrich the exhibition atmosphere. Together, these flexible strategies aim to celebrate, promote, and sustain the legacy of glass craftsmanship.

Design analysis

  1. Use thematic colors, glass vitrines, and kiln-inspired elements to create a layered and immersive exhibition experience.

  2. Combine lighting and diverse display techniques tailored to each artwork to form a flexible and dynamic exhibition space.
