New Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Junior High School faces the challenge of limited campus space, with fully enrolled classes, restricted site capacity, and evolving teaching models shaped by digital learning. As the traditional mimeograph preparation room is no longer needed, the school sought to create a flexible and inspiring environment that supports both large-class science experiments and small-group research projects, resulting in a new space designed for adaptability, creativity, and scientific exploration.

A New Innovative Setting for Emerging Young Researchers

Based on the categories of experimental equipment, the design team organized the space into an “Electronics Fabrication Zone,” a “Prototyping Materials Zone,” and a “Hand Tools Zone,” arranging equipment and storage cabinets along the perimeter while shaping a multifunctional instructional area at the center. It is within this central zone that scientific ideas, knowledge, and validation converge, fostering interaction and innovation.

Color-Driven Creativity and Clear Spatial Definition

Inspired by the concept of mechanical bearings, the designer assigned a distinct theme color to each zone, achieving a cohesive yet clearly differentiated spatial composition. A lively yellow characterizes the Electronics Fabrication Zone, symbolizing focus and enthusiasm during experimental operations; a stable, orderly blue defines the Prototyping Materials Zone, reflecting clarity and organization; and a metallic silver highlights the durability and precision of the Hand Tools Zone. Together, the three colors infuse the space with energy, stimulate diverse thinking and creativity, and strengthen students’ passion for scientific research.

Design analysis

  1. Create a flexible science-research learning environment aligned with emerging trends in resource-based education.

  2. Use color to define functional zones and establish a vibrant yet orderly science laboratory.
