Hudong Elementary School|Light Roof / Room
“ Rhythm allows children to experience and explore the connection between music and concepts such as space and time, transforming abstract music into concrete movements. ”
Crafting a Versatile Space for Both Movement and Stillness
The renovation site is a rhythmic-movement classroom located beside the main gathering hall of the activity center. The school envisioned a space that could support “dynamic” uses such as rhythm and dance classes, while also accommodating “static” activities like reading sessions and exhibitions. However, the original spatial layout and interior constraints limited the school’s ability to flexibly adapt the room to diverse teaching and activity needs.
Shaping Behavior Through Spatial Reconfiguration
The design team approached the project through four spatial strategies—linear lighting, point-source lighting, exhibition systems, and projection equipment—introducing a new banded horizontal order across the ceiling that guides the occurrence of both dynamic and static activities. In combination with floor-to-ceiling glass that dissolves the boundary between inside and outside, these elements establish continuity and a fluid spatial experience. The result is a classroom no longer bound by a single function, but one that becomes an activated field capable of hosting multiple forms of learning and performance.
Design analysis
-
Create a multifunctional space that supports both dynamic (dance, PE) and static (reading, exhibitions) activities.
-
Replace existing low walls with floor-to-ceiling glass to enhance transparency and connect the classroom with adjacent corridors.
-
Use banded metal-mesh ceilings, linear and point lighting, exhibition rails, and a projection setup to form an integrated “light canopy.”
-
Incorporate concealed storage to maintain visual clarity while ensuring complete functionality.
