The Experimental Primary School of the National Dong Hwa University|Mountain, Sea and Stone Elementary School
Every classroom at the Experimental Primary School of National Dong Hwa University features a distinctive protruding corner, yet these small spaces were never properly utilized. Other issues—such as insufficient storage, the lack of dedicated seating for individualized tutoring, and mismatched desk heights that made group work impractical—further limited the effectiveness of teaching and learning within the room.
Drawing inspiration from the shapes and colors of Hualien’s mountains, sea, and stone, the design team reimagined the classroom to center on the needs of both teachers and students. The previously idle corner was transformed into a learning nook that offers a cozy place for students to study or rest. Personalized cubbies and height-adjustable desks and chairs were introduced to resolve storage shortages and to support flexible group activities. A full blackboard wall and a telescopic teacher’s desk respond to contemporary teaching modes, enabling greater adaptability and expanding the possibilities of classroom use.
