Nantou County Fukong Elementary School|Pocket Learning Gallery
After the 921 Earthquake, Fugong Elementary School was rebuilt using an open, doorless classroom design, with three classrooms connected by a shared corridor. Over time, this layout created several challenges: classes disturbed one another during instruction, students lacked personal storage for their belongings, and the physical environment suffered from inadequate maintenance.
Upon entering the project, the design team first strengthened the overall storage system by introducing individual backpack cubbies for every student. Additional pegboard-integrated cabinets were added to the back of the classroom, allowing users to customize hooks, storage bins, or poster displays, greatly increasing flexibility in how the space can be used. The original learning nook, long neglected and in poor condition, was redesigned and expanded along the entire corridor, enriched with greenery and movable seating. This transformed the area into a more open, relaxed, and engaging corner where students can enjoy self-directed learning and playful activities.
