Tainan Municipal Sinsing Elementary School|The Stage Beneath the Stairs
The project site at Xinxing Elementary School is a semi-open, over 100-ping basement-level space that has long served as a hub for activities such as exhibitions and performances—including music and dance. However, the overall environment lacked an atmosphere conducive to showcase or performance. Blocked ventilation windows, aging electric fans, and dim fluorescent lighting all contributed to students’ reluctance to spend time in the area.
The design team began by introducing a white color scheme and reorganizing the ceiling, walls, and piping, complemented by downlights that enhance spatial ambience. Through thoughtful strategies within limited resources, the team created a stage area that supports both performance and gathering, improving functionality while establishing a clear visual focal point. For display planning, one side of the space was fitted with large exhibition boards to showcase student work, while the opposite side was transformed into a full-length blackboard wall where students can freely draw and express themselves—allowing everyone to enjoy and celebrate one another’s creativity.
