Taipei Municipal Xi-shan Experimental Elementary School |Visiting Xishan — Cloud Terrace & Mist Slope
The natural environment of Xishan is something many urban children would envy. Yet the school’s architecture has unintentionally drawn boundaries between students and nature. The school hoped to dissolve this separation, allowing children to truly immerse themselves outdoors—chatting, playing, learning, and even dining within nature’s embrace.
In response, the design team redefined the linear boundary that once divided the corridor from the playground, transforming it into an extended linear platform that merges seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. This new platform integrates play, daily activities, and learning, supported by a refreshed color plan that inspires new imaginations of campus life. Here, students can freely play, study, or eat; the activity space naturally extends from the classroom to the outdoors. By breaking and reconnecting the boundary between campus routines and the natural environment, the project creates a dynamic interplay between school life and the landscape.
