Taitung County Fushan Experimental Elementary School|Luminous Comprehensive Indoor Space
“ The environment must be rich in motives which lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences.”

Illuminating the Most Beautiful Gathering Space in Eastern Taiwan Through Spatial Focus
Fushan Experimental Elementary School sits along the western edge of the Pacific Ocean at the easternmost point of Beinan Township. Due to local climatic conditions, typhoon shutters were installed on both sides of the building, resulting in insufficient daylight and blocking the natural scenery that Taitung is known for. As the school’s only large indoor public venue, this space accommodates campus-wide workshops, visits from distinguished guests, international exchanges, and graduation ceremonies.
After entering the site, the design team removed the outdated ceiling, eliminated obsolete fixtures, and dismantled added partitions that had been previously installed for storage. Reorganized in a white base palette, the space introduces wave-shaped ceiling light tubes that convey the imagery of Taitung’s ocean, enhanced with yellow accents that create shifting visual impressions throughout the day and into the night. The redesigned window frames not only bring sunlight back into the room but also restore the natural scenery to the interior environment.
Inside, the original stage wall is retained, and all mechanical equipment is reorganized and concealed within built-in cabinetry. Select yellow accents are applied to symbolize the school’s role in guiding and nurturing students like sunlight. Circular floor markers metaphorically represent each student as a seed growing and thriving with the nourishment provided by the school—eventually stepping from Fushan Experimental Elementary School into the wider world. This concept echoes the school’s commitment to bilingual education and its ongoing efforts in fostering international cultural exchange.
