Integrating Storage and Instruction: Creating a Distinctive Sports Laboratory

A sports equipment room is one of the most frequently used spaces on campus—yet often the most overlooked—despite its need for systematic organization. Like many other schools, Wenfu Elementary School’s equipment room accommodates a wide range of sports gear for PE classes, team practices, the annual Orange Festival sports events, and various ball games. During school-wide competitions, its usage peaks even further. However, the room had long lacked a cohesive spatial strategy; oversized shelves limited accessibility, ball storage was scattered, and students often struggled to retrieve items safely and efficiently.

To resolve these issues, the design team replaced the existing doors and windows with transparent glazing to introduce abundant natural light. Perforated expanded-metal panels were applied along both sides of the room to categorize and store different types of balls, maximizing vertical wall usage while allowing the contents of each compartment to be clearly visible. To enhance classroom flexibility, a set of customized movable storage units was added specifically for large balls, addressing the difficulties students previously faced when retrieving equipment. These mobile cabinets also enable teachers to adjust the interior layout according to instructional needs, creating a more adaptable and user-centered sports laboratory.

Design analysis

  1. Inventory all sports equipment and reorganize the space layout.

  2. Clarify storage needs and integrate service areas required for instruction.

  3. Use movable storage units to support multiple activity modes.

  4. Create a cohesive visual identity and color theme to redefine the equipment room as a functional “Sports Laboratory.”
