“ The most important ingredients in a child's education are curiosity, interest, imagination, and a sense of the adventure of life.”

Clarifying Scientific Logic Through a Clean, Streamlined Space

The physics and chemistry laboratory at Zhongping Junior High School is one of the most frequently used spaces on campus, shared by nearly twenty science teachers across biology, chemistry, and earth science. With a large variety of experimental tools and equipment, the first step of the renovation was to reorganize teaching needs: the primary teaching area is reserved for physics and chemistry classes, while biology and earth science equipment is relocated to the prep room. Within the teaching space, each group receives an independent worktable that supports discussion and hands-on experiments, and the student seating orientation is adjusted to resolve line-of-sight obstruction so students can more easily see demonstrations. Water supply is centralized along the two central rows of group tables, with splash guards installed to reduce disturbance and enhance safety. Equipment is categorized according to scientific discipline and material attributes, supported by an intuitive ICON system that makes tools easy to locate, use, and return—building a clear, shared organizational logic for both teachers and students.

Using Color to Shape Atmosphere and Imagination

A palette of silver, gray, and white sets a futuristic tone throughout the lab. Light gray defines the group experiment area to maintain visual openness, while darker gray anchors heavy-duty storage cabinets, balancing lightness with stability. The teaching zone introduces a vivid yellow accent inspired by the idea of “discovering experimental surprises,” using color to spark imagination and draw students’ focus. The result is a laboratory environment that is orderly, forward-looking, and conducive to scientific exploration.

Design analysis

  1. Establish a systematic storage logic for physics and chemistry equipment through category-based organization and an ICON labeling system.

  2. Reorganize circulation and equipment placement based on teaching needs to create a safe, efficient laboratory environment.

  3. Use silver, gray, and white as the main palette to evoke a futuristic atmosphere, applying tones and materials strategically for teaching, storage, and operational needs.
