Welcoming Visitors with the School’s Learning Vision — Showcasing the Unique Spirit of Fanghe

Fanghe Experimental Junior High School embraces an educational vision centered on exploration, interdisciplinary learning, and expedition. Through diverse cross-disciplinary learning programs, students deepen and broaden their learning experience, strengthening their self-directed learning abilities. Each semester culminates in a “Learning Festival,” where students integrate and present their achievements—symbolizing their learning expedition.

The design team translated the school’s core curriculum theme, urban exploration, into the spatial identity of the entrance passageway. The removal of the heavy glass door improves ventilation and softens the boundary between campus and street. On both sides of the passage, an electronic bulletin board and a flexible posting wall reorganize how information is presented while showcasing students’ learning achievements—offering a visual focal point for visitors passing through.

A newly introduced semi-permeable curving feature wall acts as a soft boundary. Viewed from the exterior, the signature spiral staircase becomes partially visible, adding depth and a sense of discovery. Under the staircase, a curved seating nook and a small rest mound redefine the nature of the passageway, creating a relaxed corner where students can briefly read or chat during breaks.

Additionally, the designers intentionally reduced the color saturation of materials used in the corridor. This allows the new palette to respond richly to changing daylight angles and the textures of different materials throughout the seasons, creating layered light-and-shadow effects. As a result, Xiao Fang Hall offers students and teachers a dynamic, ever-changing environment that energizes daily campus life.

Design analysis

  1. Reorganize and clarify the essential functions that must remain within the passageway.

  2. Define spatial attributes and designate areas for information display, circulation, and safety management.

  3. Soften the boundary between inside and outside while reshaping and highlighting the school’s distinctive identity.
