DOZOW CONSTRUCTION|UZPS Creative Base
Wenzi Elementary School’s buildings were visually disordered, with a mix of colors that clashed with the pleasant natural surroundings. Cleaning tools piled along the corridor further contributed to the clutter. Situated in an aquaculture region, the school also faces inherent challenges such as land subsidence. Because the soil layer in front of the corridor was too thin, rainwater frequently pooled and did not drain well, limiting students’ outdoor activities.
The design team removed the boundary between the classrooms and the playground by dismantling the corridor wall and embedding gravel on site to create a grass slope that seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor spaces. Children can now access the green field and playground directly from anywhere along the corridor. A newly installed foot-washing station provides a convenient point for students to clean up before returning indoors after exploring nature. Additionally, a subtractive design approach was applied to reduce the visual noise of the central corridor: exposed pipes and electrical boxes were reorganized and repainted, and movable display panels were added to showcase student work, shaping a creative base uniquely belonging to Wenzi Elementary School.
