National Yilan Special School|Soaring Hall
Yilan Special Education School serves students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities as well as multiple disabilities. The school hoped that the main entrance hall could evoke warmth and aesthetic quality. This hall also functions as the daily dismissal area, where students line up to board their vehicles, requiring staff to move heavy fabric signs each day to indicate different queues.
In response to these issues and needs, the design team first reduced the hall’s color saturation to create a brighter and more transparent environment. Soft lines and varied tactile wall materials were introduced to counterbalance the building’s original sense of heaviness. The highlight of the renovation lies in the expansive ceiling above the hall, where students contributed a collaborative artwork that symbolizes their ability to break free from physical constraints and soar across the sky. This creative expression welcomes every visitor with warmth and optimism, reflecting the spirited imagination of the children of Yite.
