A Classroom for Both Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Artworks

The old, dim classroom not only reduced teachers’ enthusiasm for instruction but also diminished students’ interest and engagement in learning.

To create a renewed art classroom for students at the School for the Deaf, the design team began at the entrance by planning an “art light corridor,” which serves as a display area for student work as well as occasional exhibitions featuring external artists. Upon entering the classroom, storage cabinets were rearranged based on actual teaching needs; beyond organizing art tools systematically, large movable whiteboards were installed above the cabinets to support instruction. Movable desks and chairs can be flexibly arranged according to different teaching activities. In addition, the essential washing area for art classes was reconfigured, and dedicated display space was created for three-dimensional works. Though compact in size, this renewed classroom now shines as one of the most inspiring spaces on campus.

Design analysis

  1. Redefine the classroom into teaching, washing, gallery, and storage zones.

  2. Replan storage based on the needs of art tools and materials.

  3. Use lighting and fabric drapery to soften the atmosphere, especially in the gallery zone.

  4. Provide exhibition areas for both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works.

  5. Integrate the corridor and exterior classroom wall to create a refreshed identity for the art room.
