Tainan Municipal Houbi District Sindong Elementary School
The school cafeteria, built in 1962, shows significant wear compared to other campus spaces. It lacks appropriate tables, chairs, and serving equipment suitable for students. Given the school’s remote location, some students face transportation challenges, making it essential for the cafeteria to support after-school tutoring and multifunctional usage.
Design analysis
The old ceiling, fans, and cabinetry were removed to create a more spacious environment, and new T5 lighting was installed to meet the dual needs of dining and after-school study. During construction, a historical wall concealed behind the wooden fixtures was unexpectedly discovered. The design team preserved it using a display-case approach, integrating it with the new spatial design. Paired with artisanal hanging lights, the cafeteria now retains its historical character while offering a distinctive atmosphere for students.
