Hualien County Mingli Elementary School
Due to the lack of indoor activity space, the school’s passage hall simultaneously serves as an auditorium, gathering venue, and an important place for fostering connections among teachers, students, parents, and community members. Although the entrance walls were repaired after earthquake damage, the interior of the hall remained outdated and inadequate for the school’s needs.
Design analysis
Shaped plywood was used to transform the spatial character of the hall, softening the rigidity of the original walls with irregular curving surfaces that create a sense of passage and transition. Graphic design techniques were applied to redefine the school’s visual system and enrich the space. The original Confucius statue was removed and replaced with illustrated graphics that resonate more closely with young students. Large color-block graphics were also introduced to replace the bulky physical stage, allowing the space to be used more flexibly.
