National I-Lan Commercial Vocational Senior High School|Ripples of Resonance:Performance Hall
“ Music education is not only about learning to play instruments, but also about cultivating children's diverse cultural perspectives and tastes.”
Fixed Yet Flexible: A New Setting for Chinese Music Performance
The design team conducted a comprehensive survey of instrument dimensions, quantities, and storage requirements to establish a dedicated system for the school’s Chinese orchestra program, integrating both storage and display functions. This system is complemented by highly mobile modular cabinets that support different rehearsal scenarios and operational needs. In addition, an adjustable lighting setup is introduced to accommodate various modes, such as formal performances, small-ensemble presentations, and sectional practices, enabling a wide range of expressive and functional configurations within the same space.
Circulation and Zoning that Shape a Sense of Transition
Based on user needs, the space is reorganized into four primary zones: the stair foyer, reception and display area, storage zone, and main performance area. Distinct circulation paths are designed for students and visitors, creating different layers of experience. Through spatial transitions and contrasting floor patterns, students are subtly guided into an emotional shift as they enter practice or performance. Visitors, on the other hand, are first led to a display wall showcasing the school’s long-standing achievements in Chinese music, then guided through a circular archway into the performance hall. This sequential unfolding—from witnessing the ensemble’s legacy to encountering the students’ upcoming performance—creates a curated narrative journey shaped by spatial atmosphere.
